The number of AMC theaters is shrinking. Are Ohio locations affected? Here’s what to know.
AMC to continue closing ‘underperforming’ theaters. Is Ohio affected?
AMC, which operates around 860 theaters worldwide, reported about $1.29 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to a press release, down from the $1.3 billion in revenue from the previous year’s fourth quarter, pointing to fewer attendees since the pandemic and the chain’s struggle to fully rebound to pre-pandemic numbers.
In a Feb. 24, 2026, earnings call, CFO Sean Goodman said that AMC’s footprint still includes a number of “underperforming theaters” the company plans to keep trimming.
“We continue to execute a transformation of our theater portfolio, negotiating more favorable lease economics, exiting underperforming locations and selectively acquiring high-quality theaters that enhance our network,” Goodman said.
AMC did not clarify whether any Ohio theaters would close in 2026, however.

How many theaters did AMC close in 2025?
In 2025, AMC said that it closed 21 locations and opened just three locations. The company reported that its global attendance fell 2.1% in 2025. Despite some revenue growth for the full year of 2025, which topped over $4.8 billion, the company said that the economic levels experienced in 2025 are not sufficient for long-term sustainability and will likely need a strong film slate in 2026 and beyond, according to GuruFocus News via Yahoo.
About 85 leases come up for renewal each year, giving the company opportunities to renegotiate or exit underperforming locations, Goodman explained. He said this will improve the company’s overall “theater economics” as the company focuses more on intentionally improving recovery over maintaining scale. “We’ve done significant activity, closing over 200 theaters over the last 6 years and opening around 65-odd. We will continue to take actions to close theaters, to reduce leases as we go forward.”
Looking ahead, CEO Adam Aron said that the company believes 2026 will be significantly stronger, citing a much deeper movie slate and faster recovery in Europe than in North America. He noted that AMC’s January box office trends were already sharply higher year over year.
