Andy Serkis has officially confirmed that the role of Aragorn will be recast in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, focusing on an untold story that was never fully touched upon in previous installments of the massive franchise. While the original trilogy epically brought J. R. R. Tolkien’s world to life on the big screen, the upcoming movie promises to explore a smaller part of the universe. The story follows the pursuit of Gollum, one of the author’s most fascinating characters. It will also reveal a brand-new take on the events of the series that fans of the saga have come to know and love.

Speaking in a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for Animal Farm, Serkis addressed the casting for the highly anticipated movie. The actor confirmed that while speculation has been wild, a new actor is officially being sought for the iconic role formerly held by Viggo Mortensen in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.

The recasting of Aragorn is a particularly notable change, as Mortensen has become synonymous with the character. Finding someone else to step into the role would be a huge challenge both for the film’s creators and the new actor. Franchises like The Lord of the Rings come with very loyal and passionate fan bases, so finding a new face for such an iconic role would be difficult. Whoever takes on Aragorn will also have big shoes to fill because Mortensen’s portrayal of the character was, for the most part, universally praised.

Alongside the recast of Aragorn, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has also secured Kate Winslet. However, Serkis remained very vague and secretive about her character. The director explained that he would not be revealing anything new about Winslet’s role or any specific details about the upcoming film anytime soon.

We’ve got to keep it all back. I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and it’s The Hunt for Gollum, and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.

One piece of information Serkis did reveal was that the original creative team from The Lord of the Rings is involved in the new installment to ensure the movie remains true to the established lore and Peter Jackson’s vision of Middle-earth. Additionally, he explained that while The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will feel like a “proper Middle-earth film,” it also dives deeply into the psychological complexities of Gollum, offering a more intimate and character-driven story.

It’s been a tightrope for all. I mean, the entire Lord of the Rings team who worked on the originals are reassembled, for a start. So it is grounded in the lore and the world and the vision of Peter Jackson’s trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. So it will feel like a proper Middle-earth film, there’s no question, but there is a much more internal psychological investigation into one of Tolkien’s most complex characters, i.e. Gollum. So it’s a very interesting mix, and I think it is a tightrope for sure. A lot of the filmmaking techniques are ones that we are employing, which harken back to the first trilogy. I think it’ll be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the lore and world of Middle-earth that we all love. You’ve got to remember that for some people, this will be their first Middle-earth film. So that’s why it’s been such an interesting journey.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released on December 17, 2027.
