Not even a full week after Chris Mack left for a job at South Florida, the College of Charleston is expected to hire John Groce as its next men’s basketball coach.

A source close to the situation told News 4 that Groce will be introduced in Charleston on Wednesday afternoon.

Groce, 54, has led the Akron Zips to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and gone dancing four of the last five seasons. He is replacing Mack, who left on March 25, after back-to-back 20-win seasons with the Cougars.

Gorce boasts Power 4 experience, coaching Illinois from 2012 to 2017 before taking over Akron. He got his first break as a head coach with Ohio University, where he led the team from 2008 to 2012. Before that, Gorce was an assistant coach at Taylor, NC State, Butler, Xavier and Ohio State.

He boasts a record of 377–225 and has gone 4-7 in the NCAA Tournament. Gorce’s Akron team recently lost to Texas Tech in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
