Thirty passengers have reportedly been rescued after a cruise ship ran aground on a reef near the island where the film Cast Away was shot.

The Blue Lagoon Cruises vessel Fiji Princess hit a reef near Monuriki Island on Saturday while on a seven-day cruise, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Monuriki Island is also informally known as Cast Away island after the 2000 Tom Hanks film that was shot there.

Videos uploaded to social media showed the 55-metre ship grounded near the island.

A government spokesperson said the cruise operator transported all the passengers back to Port Denarau, located in the Nadi area on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.

The ship remained stuck on the reef, the FBC reported.

Blue Lagoon Cruises did not respond to a request for comment.

It’s unclear whether any Australians were on board the ship.

Fiji Navy sources told the ABC the Fiji Princess had 30 passengers and about 30 crew on board.

“All were safely rescued yesterday and moved to Denarau,” they said.

“We understand there still some crew members on board.

“There were no reported injuries and all were safe.

“The company is working on salvage and recovery of the vessel.”

The ABC understands the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is preparing a report.
