You have to go back to the Jimmy Carter Administration to find the last time Iowa men’s basketball advanced to the Final Four.
Coach Lute Olson and the 1980 Hawkeyes beat Georgetown 81-80 in the Elite Eight, clinching the school’s first Final Four berth since 1956.
Steve Waite’s basket-and-free throw with five seconds left was the winning play for Iowa.
Other top players on the 1979-80 Hawkeyes included Ronnie Lester, Kenny Arnold, Steve Krafcisin, Kevin Boyle and Vince Brookins.
Iowa played Louisville in Final Four, losing 80-72 in Indianapolis.
This year’s Hawkeyes have a chance to get there, too. They beat Nebraska in the Sweet 16 on Thursday night. They’ll play Illinois in the Elite Eight on Saturday (5:09 p.m. CT, TBS and truTV).
This year’s Final Four? Also in Indianapolis.
