[HOUR ONE]
-They showed the exterior of Madison Square Garden as Michael Cole introduced the show. They showed wrestlers arriving.
-Cody Rhodes made his ring entrance. He was cheered and fans chanted “Cody! Cody” Before Cody could say much, he was interrupted by Stephanie McMahon’s music. Stephanie came out.
Cody said he was surprised to see her there. Stephanie said she doesn’t understand why since they are in “the house my grandfather build, Madison Square Garden.” Cody said, “Okay, Stephanie McMahon, what do you want to talk about?” Stephanie said she wanted to talk about him, Randy Orton, and WrestleMania. She said he won’t like what she had to say.
She said the two of them along with Randy Orton are multi-generation talents who grew up in the business. She talked about her interactions with Andre the Giant. “We understand what it means to be on top in a different way than anybody else.” She said they took different paths to get where they are. She said he chose to take “the golden path” and he believes he can bring out the best in people. “But you can’t, this time, with this version of Randy Orton,” she said. She said this Orton is diabolical, and he has to be able to think like that.
She said Cody’s dad Dusty Rhodes understood that better than anybody. She said he could get down and dirty with the best of them. “But from what I’ve seen so far, you are not your father,” she said. Fans oooh’d and gasped. She said the current version of him can’t beat the current version of Orton. “You have no idea who you are dealing with.”
Cody soaked up the words. A “Randy! Randy!” chant broke out. He said the last thing he’d ever want is to be rude to her, but he knows everything there is to know about Randy. He listed things Orton did, and said he’s done stuff so vile they can’t show it on the show today. “And I know some of that stuff was to you,” he said.
He got worked up and said there is a whole swath of pro wrestling fans who want this to be framed as a “student/teacher” dynamic. He said he ceased to be the student a long time ago. “It wasn’t when I won the WWE Championship,” he said. “It’s when I became a babysitter.” He said he used to check to see Orton was still breathing on car rides when he was drooling all over himself. “I am not the student! I am not afraid of Randy Orton! And I am not walking into my very first WrestleMania main event,” he said. He said he isn’t his father, “but Stephanie McMahon, with all due respect, you’re not yours, either.” Stephanie wound up and slapped Cody.
“I am out here because I care about you,” she said. She said this Orton doesn’t need a babysitter and she isn’t saying he is his student. She said Orton isn’t just listening to the voices in his head, he beckons them. She said he can control them “and it appears he is listening to someone else as well.” She said unless he can think like Randy, he’ll lose that title. She said WrestleMania will be the last time he’s introduced as the WWE Champion.
As Stephanie walked away, Cody spun her around forcefully and stared her down. “Stephanie McMahon, I’ve got two words for you.” Fans yelled “Suck it!” He then said, “Thank you.” He dropped the mic and left. Fans (oddly) booed.
(Keller’s Analysis: Stephanie was good here executing her mission. I’m not sure why she took offense to Cody complimenting her that she’s not her father. Cody was cheered here until he said, “Thank you.” They’re framing Orton as being vicious rather than despicable. It seems we lost out on Cody’s promo expressing disappointment that Orton turned on him and attacked him viciously, since the whole basis of the turn “landing” so hard was supposed to be how close they were to each other. Everything that was meant to get heel heat on Orton has now shifted to just a “warning” to Cody to step up and meet that viciousness.)
As Cody left, Cole called it tough love from Stephanie tonight. Graves said that is something Cody needed to hear.
-IShowSpeed was having a passionate talk with G.M. Adam Pearce. He asked who he wanted to talk to. Danhausen showed up. IShowSpeed said he wanted Danhausen to uncurse him because his life has been a disaster. Danhausen said he would for $1 billion dollars, rights to his streaming services, his personal assistants, and a camera boy for himself. Pearce said not everything is bad because he got him ringside seats for the WWE Tag Team Title match. L.A. Knight walked in. Pearce said he’s a special guest commentator. Pearce turned around and saw Danhausen. Pearce asked, “Aren’t you supposed to disappear?” Danhausen bashfully said, “Oh yeah.” Kofi Kingston and Je’Von Evans were chatting in the background.
-The Usos made their ring entrance. [c]
(1) THE USOS vs. LOGAN PAUL & AUSTIN THEORY – Street Fight for the WWE Tag Team Titles
Knight said he’s not there to get in the business of the Usos, but rather The Vision’s business. The bell rang 22 minutes into the hour. Knight said Paul Heyman was conspicuous by his absence. Cole said he got a lot going on with Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar. Logan rolled out of the ring after a double-team move by the Usos. They cut to a break about 90 seconds in after the Usos dove onto Logan and Theory at ringside. [c]
Back from the break, Logan and Theory were bashing the Usos with trash cans. Knight said he is showing restraint just sitting there watching The Vision. He said when it’s his turn, he’ll get his. The Usos made a comeback with superkicks. The Usos put a trash can over Theory and bashed the can with kendo sticks. Cole said there were nearly 19,000 on hand tonight. Knight said it didn’t look good for Theory “and I like it, yeah!” The Usos set up a table mid-ring. Then they superplexed Theory through it. The Usos were slow to get up. Fans chanted “Holy shit!”
Logan crawled over to his mom in the front row and she gave him brass knuckles. Knight got up and attacked Logan. Logan held onto IShowSpeed. Knight pulled him over the barricade. IShowSpeed put on the brass knuckles, but when Knight came up behind him, IShowSpeed punched Knight by mistake. Fans chanted, “You f—ed up!” Logan entered the ring and swung at Jimmy. Jimmy ducked and then The Usos gave Logan stereo superkicks. Next, they speared Logan. Logan punched Jimmy. Jey leaped off the top rope onto Logan. Theory draped his arm over Jimmy’s chest and scored a three count.
Logan and Theory raised IShowSpeed’s arms afterward. Graves said IShowSpeed didn’t seem thrilled.
WINNERS: Logan & Theory in 9:00 to capture the titles
(Keller’s Analysis: Not sure where this is all heading, but this reinserts Knight into storylines.)
-A video package aired on the C.M. Punk-Roman Reigns segment on Raw last week. Graves said Reigns and Punk are both at MSG tonight.
-Liv Morgan made her entrance. [c]
-They showed Jeff Ross and Lin-Manuel Miranda at ringside.
-Liv said, “Stephanie Vaquer, you’re done for, bitch!” She asked if Vaquer is scared to be face to face with her. Vaquer came out. Liv met her as soon as she entered the ring. They swung away at each other. Vaquer came back and kicked her. Roxanne Perez attacked Vaquer from behind. Cole said Perez has been gone for months, “but came back at the most opportune moment.” Liv called Vaquer a “stupid bitch.”
-A clip aired of Seth Rollins attacking Paul Heyman last week and then Seth being dragged away in handcuffs.
-Backstage, Logan and Theory were enjoying their newly won tag titles. IShowSpeed told them he didn’t mean to get involved. Logan said he now has real enemies now, something he knows about. “You’re cooked, brother.” Heyman walked in and said they’re in good hands now. He said they should all go out to dinner. “You’re going to be fine!” Heyman told IShowSpeed. After he left, Heyman said, “The Usos are going to kill you.” Pearce walked in and asked if he read his email. Heyman said he hadn’t and asked if he asked him on a date. He then walked away.
-Bayley and Lyra Valkyria made their ring entrance. [c]
(2) LASH LEGEND & NIA JAX vs. LYRA VALKYRIA & BAYLEY – Women’s Tag Team Title match
The bell rang 54 minutes into the hour. Cole said this is the first time since 1987 a Women’s Tag Team Title match took place at MSG. Cole said another door opens for Bayley to make it to Las Vegas for WrestleMania. Bayley ducked a charging Lash who tumbled to the floor. Bayley leaped onto Nia on the other side of the ring and then Lyra dropkicked Lash at ringside as they cut to a break. [c]
[HOUR TWO]
The heel duo had Lyra isolated after the break. Lyra DDT’d Lash and crawled over and tagged in Bayley. Bayley landed a flying elbow for a two count on Lash. Bayley powerbombed Jax out of the corner and then tagged Lyra back in. Lyra landed a moonsault for a two count, with Lash breaking up the cover. Bayley ran into the ring and joined in the fight. All four were down. They went to an overhead shot. The Bellas sauntered out. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss followed behind them. Cole said they’ve all been jockeying for the tag titles all week. Everyone fought at ringside. Lash rammed Nikki into the ringpost. She did the same to Bayley after Bayley leaped at her.
Back in the ring, Lash slammed Lyra. When Charlotte and Bliss entered, the ref called for the bell. Cole said you can’t blame the fans for booing since it ended a competitive match they were enjoying.
WINNERS: No contest in 11:00 to Lash & Jax retained the tag titles.
-Cole hyped the Hall of Fame including mentioning Dennis Rodman and Sid.
-Highlights aired of the Brock Lesnar-Oba Femi angle last week. Cole said Lesnar would be on Raw later. [c]
-Danhausen stood on the stage and said WWE is returning to MSG on July 18 for a Saturday Night’s Main Event.
-Lesnar made his ring entrance, accompanied by Heyman. Cole said Heyman appeared to be in a mood. Fans taunted Lesnar with a chant for Oba Femi. Heyman said he is the advocate for “the real main event of WrestleMania.” He said he is out there to pontificate on the perils that await Oba Femi. He said last week Lesnar was distracted by Seth and therefore “caught off-guard” by Oba. He said Lesnar wasn’t dressed to fight last week, but was prepared instead for a conversation. “If you notice, tonight Brock Lesnar is dressed to fight.”
Heyman talked about how Oba will piss himself and need to be mopped up. Lesnar yanked the mic from Heyman said yelled, “Enough! Oba Femi, get your ass out here right now.” He threw the mic down. Pearce walked out instead and said that will not be happening tonight. He said the fans can boo, but his job is to preserve his main events for WrestleMania. He told Lesnar and Heyman to please leave the ring. The lights went out and Oba’s entrance theme played.
Oba tossed aside some security and then circled the ring. Cole said Oba was making Lesnar wait. Oba entered the ring and stared at Lesnar. Fans chanted “Holy shit!” Paul Levesque then slid into the ring. Fans chanted, “Let them fight!” Lesnar followed Triple H’s orders and left the ring. Fans booed. Lesnar lifted the top of the ringside steps and threw it into the side of the ring. Lesnar yelled, “I will end you.” Lesnar then gave an F5 to a security guy.
-A vignette aired on Finn Balor talking about how he did things with The Judgment Day that he’s not proud of. He said he made mistakes, including thinking he could make a man out of Dominik Mysterio. He said he is responsible for creating him, so now he’s responsible for destroying him and he’ll do it at WrestleMania.
(Keller’s Analysis: Nicely done.)
-Penta made his ring entrance. [c]
(3) PENTA vs. KOFI KINGSTON (w/Greyson Waller) – Intercontinental Title match
The bell rang 30 minutes into the hour. They cut to an early break. [c]
Waller was about to throw Penta into the announce desk, but instead set him on the ring apron gently. Kofi admonished Waller for getting involved at all. Kofi leaped over the top rope, but Penta caught him and suplexed him onto the announce desk. Penta then gave Waller a Mexican Destroyer. When Penta leaped off the top rope, Kofi landed a Trouble in Paradise for a near fall at 5:00. Penta gave Kofi a Mexican Destroyer seconds later for the win.
WINNER: Penta in 6:00 to retain the IC Title.
-Jackie Redmond interviewed Penta in the ring afterward. She asked about WrestleMania plans for him. Penta said he talked to Adam Pearce and his title will hang above the ring for a ladder match. “I love you, New York!” he said as he smiled.
-Pearce walked up to Heyman as he was instructing someone how to make a proper sandwich. Pearce asked where Lesnar was. Heyman said it’s not his business, but he left the building. Pearce asked Heyman if he read the email. Heyman said he doesn’t do emails. Heyman said he smells the stench of a corporate general manager. He said he’s heading to the ring to deliver a message. [c]
-Heyman made his entrance and entered the ring. He made a crack about the lighting guy being from New Jersey. Pearce walked out and informed Heyman that the email that he chose not to read told him that Boston police have dropped all charges against Seth. Heyman stammered that he knew that and he’s supposed to be afraid, but he’s in a native New Yorker and he fears no man. “I am the last manager standing from the 1980s, and Madison Square Garden can testify that I’m the last promoter standing from the 1990s,” he said. An “ECW!” chant broke out. Pearce said then he must’ve read in the email that as of this second, Seth is medically cleared to compete. Heyman looked shocked and dropped the mic. Seth’s music played and Heyman got bug-eyed. Seth bashed Heyman with a chair from behind. Gunther then showed up and put Seth in a sleeper at ringside. [c]
-They replayed the Gunther-Seth incident.
-They showed Elle Duncan, the Director of Netflix Sports.
(4) IYO SKY vs. RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ
The bell rang 59 minutes into the hour.
[HOUR THREE]
Raquel scored a near fall on Sky at 8:00. Asuka and Kairi Sane ran out. Cole said Kairi looked scared to death of Asuka. Sky asked Kairi why she was standing on the ring apron. Raquel charged at Sky with a kick, but Sky moved so Raquel’s boot connected with Kairi. Sky leaped off the top rope with a tornado DDT on Raquel. Sky hit Raquel with double knees in the corner. Asuka was going after Kairi aggressively verbally at ringside. Sky stopped and dove at Asuka at ringside to come to Kairi’s defense. Sky told Kairi she shouldn’t take more abuse from Asuka. When Sky rolled into the ring, Raquel gave her a Tejana Bomb for a three count.
WINNER: Raquel in 10:00.
-Cole and Graves announced a four-way for the Women’s Tag Titles at WrestleMania was now official. John Cena said he’s filming a movie for Netflix and he wanted to announce that he’d be hosting WrestleMania this year. Cole said Cena is returning, “not to the ring, but to host WrestleMania.” He said WrestleMania isn’t the same without Cena. [c]
-Reigns came out. He asked to be acknowledged. A determined Punk marched out. They fought in the ring and at ringside. Punk ended up giving a GTS to Roman after Roman speared producer Petey Williams. Fans chanted “C.M. Punk!” briefly. Punk indicated he would leave and put his hands up, but then went back after Reigns. He slammed Reigns through the announce desk. Cole said, “There’s that crazed laugh again.” Punk walked the ringside barricade as his music played and slapped hands with fans. He lost his balance and hopped down, then stood on it again. (Uh oh!)
(Keller’s Analysis: Can I speak for everyone in support of these two not tearing each other down verbally yet again. Good, intense brawl.)
