Two slogans define this Purdue basketball game: Survive and advance. They don’t ask how, but by how many.

The Boilermakers were able to survive an atypical upset bid by 11-seed Texas in the March Madness Sweet 16 game Thursday night at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. Purdue overcame poor 3-point shooting to eke out an 79-77 win over the Longhorns. It was a tip-in by Trey Kaufman-Renn that sealed the victory after Braden Smith’s drive bounced off the glass and front of the rim.

Fletcher Loyer made the first four 3s (on eight attempts) for Purdue, and the rest of the team was 0 for 12. That allowed for some long rebounds and opportunities for the Longhorns to run. And the Boilermakers survived the hot-shooting Tramon Mark, who had a game-high 29 points on 15 shots.

That means the 30-8 Boilermakers with their great seniors are headed to the Elite Eight, in the same building they continued their seven-game winning streak. They put all five scorers in double figures.
