Maximum had been non-unionised contract staff hired in small factories throughout business clusters, generating auto portions, electronics and clothes, amongst different issues. They earn between 10,000 rupees ($107; £79) and 15,000 rupees a month – wages that experience remained in large part unchanged for years. Many are migrant staff, dwelling hand-to-mouth in cramped housing at the town’s outskirts.
